Along the same square, next door to the hotel is the best-known sidewalk café and restaurant in town. Anytime is the right time for an enjoyable break. Every day you can get delightful, simple meals, a nice soup, or just simply a snack there from 8 AM to midnight. Most famous are its delicious sateys. But also the Vat Shrimps, Vatburger, the Cassava and Soato soup are very popular.

‘t Vat’ is famous abroad for its New Year’s Eve Surifesta Owru Yari street party. This is only one of the various annual festivities.

’t Vat’ was established in 1981. From the very start it has been the quintessential football cafe. It was the favourite haunt of the Cosmos veteran’s football club, for example. The regulars even formed a Vat Team. Though Cosmos and the old Vat Team are no longer there, we still have the internal Vat football pools during the World Cup and the European Cup, and gather to root for Holland and Brazil.

For instance, every last Thursday of the Month, hotel Zeelandia Suites organizes a Tourist Night in cooperation with ’t VAT, showing the diversity of Suriname in many ways. 

’t VAT’ won the "Fernand de Rooy Tourism Award” in 1998, the highest national honor in the field of tourism. In 2000, the Caribbean Employers Confederation also awarded ’t VAT’ a prize.

Sidewalk Café ‘t VAT’ has Coffee Corner (Koffiehoekje) and a special Cocktail bar. You can have a nice cup of coffee, cappuccino or a strong Irish coffee. But the warm, savoury Surinamese sandwiches and tosties are very popular too. Have these with a glass of cold, pure fruit juice. Or have an exotic cocktail, a smoothie with or without alcohol. Your day will be complete!
